Robert Henry Newport (1876-1932)

Robert Newport Robert Newport was a brother to John James Newport, and was was born on 26th June 1876 in Hampstead.

He was married to Mary Bromley, although the date and location is not currently known.

Robert passed away on 9th December 1932 in Exeter, Devon, although the manner of his death does not appear to have been natural (see below).

Curiously the second headstone (see below), is of a John Bromley. Given his age one wonders whether this was Mary's father. Mary also being laid to rest here.

The epitaph is interesting and, in the first instance did not make sense to me. It reads He Was Not For God Took Him, and is taken from Enoch, Genesis 5:24. It means that he did not die a normal death but was taken directly by God. This raises an, as yet, unanswered question, how did Robert meet his end?

The second headstone in the image is a bit of a mystery to me and is somewhat unclear. It reads:

John Bromley
Born 10 Ma(rch) 1854
Called Home November 19, 1932
H(e) Giveth His Beloved Son(?)
Also in loving memroy of Mary
Beloved wife of the above
Who fell asleep March 1st 1938
Aged 88 years.
Forever with the Lord.
